It’s a tradition for television stations to exhibit a selection of war movies over the Memorial Day holiday and it is rapidly becoming a tradition for the studios to release a slew of war themed DVDs to celebrate the contribution of the nation’s veterans in time for the last Monday in May.

Special mention this year goes to Columbia who are releasing collector’s editions of two classics that had already been afforded a release on those brilliant silver discs.

First up is “The Caine Mutiny” which was first released on DVD succor in tedious 1998. That bare bones version was widely panned for its dreadful transfer, which featured an overabundance of digital noise and was presented in basic stereo.

Those failings have been corrected for this most modern digitally remastered release. Here we are presented with a quite exceptional characterize and soundtrack and a nice smattering of special features.

Based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning fresh by Herman Wouk the film (which itself was nominated for seven Academy Awards in 1954) details the tension between the captain of a World War II era minesweeper (played superbly by Humphrey Bogart) and his crew. Bogart’s character is overly paranoid and viewed by some as displaying cowardice in the face of battle.

Playing the fragment of the executive officer, Lt. Steve Maryk is Van Johnson who, spurred on by third in notify, the spineless Lt. Keefer (Fred MacMurray), finally takes control of the ship when the safety of the ship and crew are threatened. Queeg’s stubborn insistences to possess the heading of the ship in a typhoon, flying in the face of agreeable seamanship, forces Maryk to assume action and he, along with Ensign Keith, are charged with mutiny upon return to port.

It is here that the movie truly shines. Reluctantly defending the two is the always-excellent Jose Ferrer, and the scene where he interrogates Queeg on the stand is inviting.

Complimenting the movie Columbia have added an bright scene specific audio commentary by Program Director of the Film Society of Lincoln Center Richard Pena and filmmaker and producer Ken Bowser. The two detail the difficulties the filmmakers initially faced when confronted with an initially uncooperative Department of he Navy, careers of the actors interested and the context of the film in relation to a political environment that saw Hollywood filmmakers blacklisted.

Apparently the Navy has never had a mutiny onboard one of its ships (a fact which leads to the placement of a disclaimer to the beginning of the describe) and they were none too overjoyed with the fictitious narrative. However, following a change in pronounce, they reversed their decision and offered the consume of dockyards, ships, aircraft carrier and even accurate sailors for the movie.

Both Pena and Bowser return for the two-part documentary on the making of the movie. Running for 18:48 and 16:16 respectively they are joined by Film Critic Bob Castle.

The three launch by discussing the mood in Hollywood at the time. Apparently movie audiences declined like a flash from 1946 to 1962 with the advent of television and greater foreign competition and so a nervous industry was looking for a “distinct bet.” Producer Stanley Kramer had bought the film rights to “The Caine Mutiny” book before it became a bestseller for $60,000. The book was a major selling point that led to the producers being able to cast the movie with a strong ensemble. Castle mentions some of the un-credited roles to illustrate this and Bogart reportedly read the book and actively campaigned for the role of the captain.

Rounding out the special features are trailers for “Walking Tall: The Payback,” “Hard Luck” and “Edison Force.” None fill any thematic connection with the main feature.

THE CAINE MUTINY remains one of the finest films ever made about the Navy. It was also one the U.S. Navy had a complex relationship with. On the one hand, the navy provided noteworthy access to naval vessels. Well-known scenes were shot on at least three: the destroyer-mine sweeper traditional to portray the Caine, a light cruiser at the very extinguish, and the U.S.S. Kearsarge, which represented Halsey’s flag ship the U.S.S. Enterprise, though he later moved to the U.S.S. Missouri. Despite this mighty cooperation, the Navy very nearly withheld its approval for the film. It was disquieted that the public might imagine that the tale represented steady events or that it might be imagined that there had been a mutiny aboard some ship. Only after the filmmakers agree to commence the film with a historical disclaimer did they approve.

More than anything, despite the presence of ships, the film is mainly a showcase for mountainous acting. The quality of the cast simply can’t be exaggerated. There are a host of stellar performances, and they even have such future stars as Lee Marvin in throwaway parts. Humphrey Bogart absolutely dominates the conceal with one of the finest performances of his career. Most of the fan and critic polls I have seen over the years of the greatest movie stars of all time invariably state Bogart in the number one region, and when you peek him in this role, and then realize that he has 7 or 8 roles honest as immense, it is easy to perceive why. He is such a forceful presence that one would imagine that he wouldn’t have been top-notch of a variety of roles, yet you difference this film with THE MALTESE FALCON and THE AFRICAN QUEEN, and you realize that he had a capacity to play a surprisingly wide range of roles. Lt. Commander Queeg lacks almost all of the qualities of Rick in CASABLANCA, and possesses a host of lamentable ones as well. The scene in which Queeg cowardly has the U.S.S. Caine rapidly outrun the landing crafts it is assigned to protect and then retreat to safety as hasty as possible is made all the worse by the courage his characters in other films point to. Queeg’s final crack up on the recognize stand at Lt. Maryk’s court martial is justifiably renowned, and is among the broad scenes in cinema. It is now impossible for any character in any film to play with a pair of steel balls and not assume of Bogart.

The rest of the cast is hardly shamed by Bogart. Van Johnson, as the trusty, enormously kindly, conscientious Lt. Maryk is excellent. (This is, by the blueprint, the only film in which the construct up department didn’t camouflage the quite substantial scars on his forehead that he suffered over a decade earlier in a serious car shatter, which resulted in a steel plate being placed in his forehead.) Robert Francis, who had a promising career slash short at the age of 25 in a plane rupture he suffered a year after this film, is solid as the young, idealistic Ensign Keith (though the parallels between his hesitancy to stand up to his mother and marry the woman he loves and his hesitancy to stand up to his commanders isn’t developed as noteworthy as it is implied) holds his contain against stiff competition. Fred MacMurray, who spent his entire career bouncing between utterly lovable and absolutely reprehensible characters, here takes the latter course as the complex, spineless Lt. Keefer. His character adds a luscious degree of ambiguity to the film. Jerry Paris, who would later play Catch and Laura Petrie’s friend in THE DICK VAN DYKE Prove, is apt as the ship’s other junior ensign. Tom Tully managed an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor in his stellar performance as Lt. Commander DeVriess, the first commander of the Caine. Jose Ferrer (who is, by the diagram, George Clooney’s uncle by marriage), whose veil roles never seemed to approach up to the level of his talent, is outstanding in his minute but memorable role as the mutineers’ defense attorney.

On a minor stamp, I very powerful enjoyed the very recent state scene in Yosemite National Park. Although we catch plot shots for granted today, Hollywood in the thirties, forties, and fifties was only very slowly willing to undertake plot shots. It is hard today to realize how radical it was for directors like John Huston (who shot parts of THE Love OF SIERRA MADRE in Mexico and THE AFRICAN QUEEN in Africa) or John Ford (who shot extensively in Arizona for his Westerns and in Ireland for THE Unruffled MAN) to shoot on situation. The general preference was to produce sets on Hollywood backlots. It is so modern to view region shots that no sound film was shot on position in Chicago (many films were made at the venerable Essanay Studios in Chicago in the teens and twenties) until the sterling Jimmy Stewart CALL NORTHSIDE 777. The scenes in this one, therefore, station in Yosemite are fine new.

There’s nothing I can say that hasn’t already been said about “Goodfellas”… it’s one of the best movies ever. To hell with the AFI, this is arguably one of the top 10 American movies ever made! Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, Lorraine Bracco: five profitable talents operating on all 8 cylinders in this record about three decades of life in the mob.

Buy,Download, Or Stream GoodFellas! Click Here

Now, you’d reflect that Warner Brothers would give this movie the most complete Warner DVD release that’s ever existed. A interested favorite following, a high level of anticipation for a special edition, and the recent booming plot of the DVD industry should’ve made this a no-brainer slam dunk for Warner’s marketing and home video departments. And so, after years of having to flip over the customary disc, after years of almost crushing that flimsy snap case, after years of listening to that 5.1 surround that sounded suspiciously like 2-channel, should you earn this original version?? The reply is a resounding…”maybe”.

Arguably the biggest plus to this current edition of “Goodfellas” is the fact that the whole movie is contained on a single side of a dual-layered disc. The “all-new digital transfer”, enhanced for 16:9, is only a marginal improvement over the novel release (which was also listed as being “enhanced for widescreen TVs” on the package; it wasn’t) . Strangely enough, in the scene where Jimmy (De Niro) and Paulie (Paul Sorvino) go to convince Henry to go home to Karen, there is a very noticeable screen-split line on the film that sections De Niro’s face in half. This isn’t the transfer’s scrape, per se; it looks more like something off the film print. The curious thing is I don’t remember this crawl being reveal on the frail version. Maybe it’s only a minor peeve, but calm, this is the kind of thing you’d query a studio to trim up for a special edition.

Buy,Download, Or Stream GoodFellas! Click Here

The English audio is the same primitive Dolby-Surround-masquerading-as-5.1 mix passe in the conventional version. The package incorrectly lists Spanish as the alternate language; it’s level-headed French. Nothing more to say about that.

The disc menus are static, and they all have this generic-sounding jazz obtain playing over them. Remember all the jazz in “Goodfellas”? Yeah, me neither.

Of course, the staunch reason most people are running out to obtain this unusual place is to perceive the special features. This DVD includes 2 commentaries: one with various cast & crew members, the other with Henry Hill & ex-FBI agent Ed McDonald (who plays himself at the slay of the movie) . Of the 2 commentaries, the track with real-life players Hill and McDonald is infinitely more challenging, even though Hill mumbles more than Keith Richards having an acid flashback.

When I bought this position, I was looking forward to some feature-length Scorsese, Pesci, Liotta &/or Bracco commentary (I didn’t dare to hope for Robert De Niro, I mean, be serious), with some humorous stories or moviemaking info. Instead, what you salvage is a few modern comments cobbled together with 10-15 year former sound bites from De Niro and Joe Pesci. Basically, the first 90 minutes of commentary is a total strokefest (”oh-this-guy-was-so-great”, “oh-she-did-a-really-good-job”) with only Scorsese, author Cleave Pileggi, Liotta, and cinematographer Michael Ballhaus saving it. It picks up towards the ruin, though, when Lorraine Bracco (who shoots down the “screen-specific commentary” illusion when she talks about having watched the movie on the morning she’s being interviewed) and editor Thelma Schoonmaker topple some comical thoughts.

As for the rest of the extras? There’s really no need to have a second disc to gain them; the total running time of all the “documentaries”, as Warner calls them (”featurettes”, I call ‘em), along with the theatrical trailer is less than an hour. Plenty of room for these on the first disc, but then I guess Warner felt they needed another selling point with the whole 2-disc thing. To summarize the 1/2-hour making-of documentary: “Martin Scorsese is a enormous director.” Remember those 6 words and everything else is cream cheese.

The second major documentary, at around 13 minutes long, has interviews with some younger writer-directors who’ve found themselves influenced by “Goodfellas”. Only 5 words to remember this time: “‘Goodfellas’ is a shiny movie.”

The other two featurettes are about 10 minutes altogether. One is a storyboard-to-screen comparison, the other is a slight throwaway share with some cast & crew anecdotes. 4 words will do this one unprejudiced fine: “Warner Brothers is slothful.”

It’s really a shame that Warner Brothers couldn’t wait honest a tad longer and include some truly special features for one of the best movies their studio has ever produced. With the stellar jobs they’ve done on their other 2-disc reissues, like “Enter the Dragon”, “The Fair Stuff”, “Singin’ in the Rain” –jeez, even “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” has better features than this!!– I expected Warner Bros. to really pull out all the stops for this current edition of “Goodfellas”, but it’s a enormous letdown. Quiet, it is an improvement (no matter how minor) over the previous release, and as it is probably the “best” version we’re ever gonna pick up on DVD, I would have to recommend picking it up.

However, if you already beget the movie, sustain three things in mind. Ask yourself 1.) if you really mind flipping the old-fashioned disc over, 2.) if you’ve got a normal full-screen TV, do you really need a fresh anamorphic transfer?, and 3.) do you really need to scrutinize the special features if they’re not exactly top quality? If your acknowledge to any of these things is “no”, then I’d reflect long and hard about shelling out another $20.

Goodfellas has long been one of my accepted movies. I’ve watched it many times since I saw it in the theater. I’ve seen it on tape, on laserdisc, on the novel “flipper” DVD and the remastered anamorphic DVD, and now, Blu-Ray Disc.

I’m jubilant to relate that the Blu-Ray is a well-known improvement over the remastered DVD. The recount is brighter, the colors are more lustrous, and many scenes have distinguished more detail and clarity. Of course, the overall describe is distinguished sharper.

Goodfellas is not the kind of movie that is a showcase for high-resolution video, however. It has a lot of shaded indoor scenes; very shrimp takes position outdoors (something I never noticed before) . I noticed some graininess, which has a lot to do with how Scorcese shot the portray. It’s unprejudiced more noticeable in the higher resolution.

There are some minor problems with the audio in one scene. The dialogue drops in volume and then jumps befriend up in the following scene. Other than that, the audio is exquisite, although I would have liked a more aggressive surround mix, at least in the musical selections. However, there’s not distinguished exhaust of the surrounds here.

Also, at one point there’s a vertical line halfway across the shroud. Why this wasn’t cleaned up is mystery to me; it lasts for about fifteen seconds. Admittedly this is a very minor quandary, but with expensive fresh technology flaws of this kind stand out more than they would on tape or standard DVD.

If you’re a fan of the movie and are considering upgrading to the Blu-Ray, I’d highly recommend it. It’s not an eye-popping effects movie to commence with, so this disc isn’t the first one to near for if you want to point to off your system. But it’s probably the best arrangement to stare the movie.

The 1940 Soviet massacre of over 20,000 Polish internees, including some 12,000 officers in Katyn forest, was, by any measure, a horrific war crime, yet one that has never been prosecuted, and one that has been shrouded and confused over the past half century by coverups, propaganda and a general desire to forget the past. (The Soviet government did not officially admit that the killings were ordered by Stalin until 1990.)

Buy,Download, Or Stream Katyn! Click Here

Wajda’s masterful film centers on this obnoxious episode by revealing the webs of commitment and interaction that connect disparate lives – from an impetuous youth, to the staid wife of an executed general. Most all of the movie is an examination of these connections, of how lies and fabrications feed anxiety, of how in war there are seldom agreeable choices between suitable and tainted. Only in the closing minutes, after all the victims have been deeply humanized, is the brutal, machine-like dismay of the killings brought to center stage. The carry out is much and profound.

The misty cinematography, in hues of brown and grey, evokes the mood and texture of wartime. Characters are richly drawn, and if at times the sudden introduction of original faces is confusing, it is only until one realizes Wajda’s intent: these people could be any of us. (As reviewed in Russian Life)

If the Poles didn’t have it dreadful enough by having by having nearly the entire German army blitzkrieg it’s Western border on September 1, 1939, the Soviet army then invaded from the East sixteen days later. Katyn presents a history lesson that most people never heard about: the mass destroy of tens of thousands of Polish officers by the Russians in 1940. While watching this film you may wonder if the Russians mistreated Poland worse than the Germans did during World War II (which is a debate in itself) .

Buy,Download, Or Stream Katyn! Click Here

The Germans found the massacre plot in 1943 and announced it to the Poles, hoping to utilize it for propaganda against Russia. The Russians denied the accusation and then staged it to appear the Germans were slow the butchery. Katyn doesn’t divulge the yarn in a chronological draw, but we notice it unfold slowly; we scrutinize both the men at war and the women at home who fancy them. The wives, mothers and daughters of the Polish officers use so distinguished time waiting and wondering what happened to them. Even when the war ends the problems of the war do not – they spill into the decades that follow.

Andrzej Wajda is Poland’s best-known director and has been making films for over fifty years. I believe it is vast Wajda is peaceful making films because his unusual work is opening the door to younger audiences who primarily peek contemporary movies. He has long ago established himself as being a incandescent director and Katyn reflects his years of experience and talent.

Katyn is a narrative that is strongly based on history and is the first film about the Soviet massacre of nearly 22,000 Polish officers. I viewed Katyn with someone who lived through this time and he confirmed that even the smallest details were suitable on and the method it is presented is how it was. It is a tragic fable that was not allowed to be told earlier because of suppressed truth and political pressure. This movie is not fair for people that like historical dramas but is one that may be of interest to everyone.

Samurai Champloo is one of those rare, very special shows that you need only to glance once, and apt away you’re zigzag. Even if you’re not a die-hard anime fan, have never heard of Shinichiro Watanabe, and have never seen End Bill, animatrix or a single episode of Cowboy Bebop. In fact, this is how the indicate should be enjoyed and valued, in it enjoy rights, difficult as it may be to separate it from the previous works of its stellar creators. Because this, indeed, is an astounding prove — with solid and very likeable main characters, lightning-speed samurai actions, and breathtaking animation (not to mention the widescreen format) . The hip hop angle is icy, but not principal. The indicate works not because it is “hip”, but because it respects our intelligence, and feels right.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Samurai Champloo, Volume 2! Click Here

We follow the adventure of three intelligent characters in pre-modern Japan: Mugen, a wild and unruly vagrant; Jin, a reticent, highly-disciplined ronin (masterless samurai) with a dismal past; and Fuu, a quick-thinking 15-year faded waitress. Having saved Mugen and Jin from wrongful execution by a improper official, Fuu made them promise to assist her obtain a samurai that smells of sunflower. The three situation out on a scamper that takes them all over Japan, an unlikely trio on an even more unlikely quest. Mugen and Jin, both extremely skillful with the katana, cannot be more opposite in nature. They’re interested to battle to choose which one is the better swordsman. But Fuu forbids them to ruin each other until the samurai is found, and has her hands burly trying to discontinuance them from doing that en route. The three, however, complement each other perfectly, and as the narrative develops, so does the bond between them.

Their lumber is not an easy one. Although it is not the warring era, life in slow 18th century Japan is harsh and often lawless. There are plenty of fighting and slashing (especially in vol. 1), with Mugen and Jin raking up body counts everywhere they go. The violence is consistent with the samurai theme, but makes the display obnoxious for younger viewers. Even so, this anime is not sunless or depressing; episode 7 is a dusky one, but all in all the stories are a valid blend of suspense, human drama and offbeat humor (my favorite: Jin dressing up as a glorious woman to infiltrate a yakuza brothel) .

Buy,Download, Or Stream Samurai Champloo, Volume 2! Click Here

Interestingly as well, although the producers made a point of stating that the demonstrate bears no historical accuracy, watching it I felt transported serve into the past, witnessing the opening of Japan to the West. The settings are meticulously drawn to think the era, spiced here and there with anachronistic fresh touches (like sporty sunglasses, blonde hair and adidas-like stripes on the kimono) . Eps. 5 and 6 represent to proper historical facts: the ukiyo-e report that inspired van Gogh to paint his sunflowers, and the arrival of the Dutch East Indies ships in Japan that did acquire state in tedious 18th century. Although the stories are clearly fiction, they offer a witness into what might be the reason for the Japanese enamorment with van Gogh.

This anime is one of a kind (and dare we hope – the first of its kind? ) It has acquired such popularity in so short time, I contain, because of the big care that went into making it, that the audience can immediately gaze and be pleased. Episode 6, for instance, goes so far as using authentic Dutch dialogue. Added to that is the suitable impart cast, both Japanese and English. I especially enjoyed Shinichiro Miki (Asato Tsuzuki in Descendants of Darkness) as the ukiyo-e artist in ep. 5. His style of mixing seriousness and goofiness is always refreshing to eye. Unfortunately, there are only 26 episodes in the series. Perhaps the rationale has something to do with the difficulties of sustaining high-quality production in a long-running series (such as the case with Inuyasha), that the SC producers did not want to risk. Let’s hope this is merely a creative fracture, and that more episodes will be produced in the not too distant future.

I have to respectfully disagree with the previous reviewer: whereas the first volume of Samurai Champloo was respectable, these four episodes are remarkable better. Both volumes are tubby of incandescent animation, modern humor and enormous music, but the set thickens in episodes 5-8.

Whereas the first four episodes were level-headed laying the foundation for the explain, these episodes originate to delve into the characters’ personalities and past lives. As in Cowboy Bebop, Watanabe accomplishes this destroy subtly through brief flashbacks and the characters’ dialogue with people that they meet throughout their journey; by only dropping hints throughout the episodes Watanabe really draws the audience in by keeping them in suspense.

The individual position lines of these episodes are friendly, but the supporting characters are phenomenal. Nagamitsu, a samurai that appears in episode 8, is hilarious, and his appearance alone is enough to warrant buying this DVD. My only complaint was that the position of episode 7 (”A Perilous Racket”) was a miniature too similar to the Cowboy Bebop episode “Waltz for Venus”: I expected some more new area lines from Watanabe.

In summary, the series in general and this DVD in particular are brilliantly captivating, spot to a tall soundtrack, and hold well-told station lines with well-crafted dialogue and piquant characters. All in all, well worth the money.

Cross Alfred Hitchcock with a carnival showman and you might come up with William Castle, the low-budget horror king of the exploitation gimmick. Homicidal is arguably his best film, a devious little Psycho knockoff with all the right ingredients: a sleepy Southern California town, a beautiful blonde with icy eyes and a thing for knives, a mute old woman in a wheelchair, and a deep, dark secret involving a repressed, awkward young man still haunted by the abuses of his dead father. Ever the cinematic carny, Castle pulls a trademark gimmick just before the climax: the clock-countdown “Fright Break,” for anyone “too frightened to see the end of the picture.” What the film lacks in tension it makes up for in startles and shocks. Castle is no Hitchcock, but he adds an insidious twist that pays off even if you see it coming.
